When it comes to your health, no one cares more about it than you. Not friends, neighbors, co-workers, family, or even your doctor. It’s up to you to take responsibility for the life you live, and realize the effects your lifestyle choices have on your well-being. Those who take ownership of their health have less need to take medication or see a doctor.
Consider the case of Barry. At the age of 52, after being overweight and inactive for years, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Despite being advised numerous times that he needed to change his eating habits and be more physically active, he did not accept personal responsibility for his medical conditions. Instead he kept wishing for the “magic pill” that would allow him to keep doing as he had, but with different results. It did not happen, of course – it never does. Eight years later, after suffering 2 heart attacks and partial amputations of both feet, Barry was totally disabled and still taking a boat load of medications. Taking medications to treat the symptoms of chronic disease does not equate to good health.
In contrast, there is Phil. Never exercising, eating junk food, and living a hectic Manhattan schedule had caused him to balloon to 100 pounds overweight. The day he was told he had type 2 diabetes, he recognized the role he had played in the matter. He began educating himself on how to eat better and how to move more. He took control. As a result, he is now at his ideal weight and feels better than ever before. He is taking no medication, and no evidence of diabetes can be found. The changes he made can be easily continued for the rest of his life.
What is the difference between Barry and Phil? Quite simply, Barry was not ready to change, and instead wanted others to manage his symptoms, allowing him to continue his unhealthy behaviors. Phil, on the other hand, recognized that his habits needed to change, and as a result he took action. He knew that it was up to him to make these changes, and no one else. Everyone can take action, but how quickly and to what degree is up to you. You may need preparation and perhaps more skills, or “tools,” in order to do so.
